GDHS Alumni maintain steady support for GDHS

Alex McLean didn’t mind getting a late night call October 25th with an order to go to the Glencoe Legion to pick up a cheque for $1485.  The community purchased enough tickets to offer two sizeable scholarships and a 50:50 cash prize.

GDHS Commencement was a charming affair with Emily Patterson winning the $700 50th Anniversary Award.  She is studying architecture at Ryerson University.  Brittany Smith, who won the $500 Alumni & Friends Scholarship, is preparing for post-secondary studies.

The annual Pub Night October 25th at the Legion was a great evening with barbequed steaks, visiting, delicious late night beef sandwiches from Victor’s, and tunes by Wayne Fletcher.  Wayne provided the perfect ambience and then sang to the crowd at evening’s end.  Now is the time for alumni from away to decide to gather in 2009.  The Association organizes the event at the Legion; teams, classes, and cliques just have to organize themselves to show up and enjoy themselves.

“We need an event to pull the winning 50:50 tickets,” says Alumni Association president, Richard Cowell. “Gathering at the Legion is a great chance for alumni and friends of the Glencoe District High School to come together.  This is one of the ways alumni can support their high school.  The fight to keep this school open is far from over.”

The GDHS Alumni & Friends Association will host a ham and turkey bingo at Appin Community Centre on December 9th at 8 p.m. Last year, $1000 was raised for:
• The GDHS Cheerleading Team
• Annual overnight trip to Stratford
• The 2008 GDHS Prom, and
• Supplies for 2008 Soccer Teams and Physical Education.

The annual bonspiel is Feb 14, 2009. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Howard vanderHooft, who is the man behind the Funspiel and the Turkey Bingo.  Call Howard now to reserve a spot in the GDHS bonspiel at 519 289-5335.
