Crystal James, GDHS 1995 – 1999, won the $1100 jackpot. The other winner was the GDHS alumni scholarship funds.

Crystal owns Crystal’s Corner Cafe on Haggerty Road in Newbury. She started in business when she was in Grade 3, helping out Judy Jones, a local entrepreneur. In March 2009, Judy was ready to retire from her Newbury restaurant, and Crystal bought her out.

Crystal fondly remembers her GDHS years. A highlight was working on a model of the Glencoe arena complex, finishing the project after exams when everyone else had disappeared. She was the proud winner of the Communication and Technology Award in 1997. Selected for a special class run by Mrs. DeVries in 1997, Crystal remembers learning life skills that helped her prepare for owning her own business.

Congratulations, Crystal! Thank you for supporting the GDHS Scholarship Fund.

Amanda Vollick Ross ran an extremely successful United Way Campaign raising $1053.88 for organizations in our community .Donations were made through dedicated staff and student activities.
Events for students included Tape a Teacher to the Wall (Mr. Baia and Mr. Wolfe), busking in the Cafeteria (music students), the Helping Hands Homeroom competition where students purchased helping hands for $2.00 which were posted in the front hall, and a Field Hockey buyout. Events for staff included dress down Fridays, a Staff luncheon, and a silent auction where staff had the opportunity to purchase Mr. Moore and Mr. Baia to teach a class.

On November 17th all grades 9 and 10 students participated in a TVDSB Violence Prevention play entitled “Cut” which addresses violence in relationship issues. After viewing the play, senior students facilitated activities designed to encourage discussion and skills with the goal of prevention of violent behaviour.

The Breakfast Program continues to serve 40-50 students each day, especially those athletes who have had morning practices! The group appreciates donations that are coming in and welcome everything that might be used for breakfast.

GDHS had its first music concert of the school year on Wednesday, November 9. The next concert will be Wednesday, December 14, weather permitting.

On Monday October 31st the halls were filled with so many different faces and creatures as students displayed their Halloween costumes. The Students’ Council organized an assembly that allowed the student body to vote on the costumes they liked most. A JibJab video of staff acting ghoulish was a new addition to the assembly, as was a demonstration of a self-carving pumpkin by Mr. Broderick. Many of the Glencoe public donated canned goods that were picked up by Students’ Council volunteers on Halloween Night. A huge thank you goes out to all those who made this canned goods drive such a success.

The Students’ Council celebrated their hard work by attending The Black Light Harvest Dance on November 4th. Over 100 students supported this event organized by the Students’ Council Dance Committee.

On November 3rd the GDHS District Review Team welcomed several visitors to the school to introduce them to all that GDHS has to offer. On November 24th, the Ministry of Education-mandated District Review will take place at GDHS. These visitors will visit classrooms and will tour the school with the goal of learning what the school currently does well and giving feedback on areas of improvement.

There is more than one reason to get to school before the opening bell at Glencoe District High School these days. Students are flocking to school for a breakfast program that has grown in popularity since the school year began.

Teacher Diane Zinkan and educational assistant Sharon White serve up a rotating breakfast menu to students who are in need of something to eat before the school day begins. Zinkan stresses that not all participants are eating at Breakfast Club due to financial need but instead many stop by for a bite after early morning sports or band practices while others are simply not interested in eating breakfast at home before catching the bus or walking to school.

The menu features a variety of items throughout the week including cereal, toast, bagels, smoothies, cinnamon buns, fruit and juice. Baking is done in the Developmental Education Program classroom or by Zinkan and White to ensure that no student need be hungry starting their school day.

A can is set out to allow students to make donations and both Zinkan and White are impressed with the manners of the students who stop by to grab a quick bite or meet with friends to visit at the classroom with a cafe ambience.

Having received funding to begin the program through Breakfast Clubs of Canada and Breakfast for Learning programs, GDHS is already serving approximately 50 students each day. It is well-known that students who are well-nourished perform better in class and are also better able to concentrate.

While funding has been secured for some expenses and the community has been generous, Zinkan says that donations of items like napkins, fruit, eggs or other supplies would be welcomed. Anyone with questions may call Zinkan at the high school at 519-287-3310.
