Commencement 2013

by Marie Williams-Gagnon, Transcript & Free Press
For decades, Glencoe District High School’s graduates have travelled home early for Thanksgiving celebrations in order to attend commencement exercises. This year, however, due to a PA Day scheduled for October 11, the date of commencement was moved forward to September 19. Despite the change, the gymnasium was full of guests for the ceremony.
Following a processional and the playing of the  national anthem by the school band, opening remarks were offered by new principal Melanie Stanley who said she looks forward to working in a community “which honours academics and achievement.” Students’ council president Jacob Weber and vice-president Jordan Goddyn offered congratulations and best wishes. Thames Valley District School Board trustee Rob Campbell brought greetings on behalf of trustees.

Scott Patterson

Suddenly on Friday August 30, 2013, as the result of an accident, Scott Gordon Patterson of R.R. 3 Newbury in his 53rd year.   Scott was a born farmer.  He became the next generation to care for the land and truly loved his farming life.  He devoted more than 30 years to trucking sweet corn, making many life-long friends “in the corn patch”.  He owned and operated a snowplow truck for the MTO for over 25 years, clearing the way for travellers on the 401.  He was a faithful elder at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Wardsville.  Scott visited many ballparks in Southwestern Ontario, through his own days of playing baseball and then watching his daughters.  He was passionate about all of his activities – but most of all he loved all his girls. His competitive nature, sense of humor and hard work ethic will remain in the hearts of his family, as they cherish his memory.  They were truly blessed to have him in their life.

Nigel Lockyer

Here’s another GDHS alumnus for the Hall of Fame.  Anyone remember Nigel Lockyer?

“Lockyer received his PhD in particle physics at Ohio State University, did a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and then became a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he began teaching in 1984. His career since then has been a busy one, including stints as head of a large particle physics experiment at Fermilab, near Chicago, called CDF (which co-discovered the top quark); Chair of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Grant Selection Committee; Chair of the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s review committee; and member on a host of professional committees in the US.”
