Commencement 2013

by Marie Williams-Gagnon, Transcript & Free Press
For decades, Glencoe District High School’s graduates have travelled home early for Thanksgiving celebrations in order to attend commencement exercises. This year, however, due to a PA Day scheduled for October 11, the date of commencement was moved forward to September 19. Despite the change, the gymnasium was full of guests for the ceremony.
Following a processional and the playing of the  national anthem by the school band, opening remarks were offered by new principal Melanie Stanley who said she looks forward to working in a community “which honours academics and achievement.” Students’ council president Jacob Weber and vice-president Jordan Goddyn offered congratulations and best wishes. Thames Valley District School Board trustee Rob Campbell brought greetings on behalf of trustees.

Reunion service

The gym at Glencoe District High School hosted the reunion church service with over 200 people in attendence.  The worship band from Bethel Baptist Church in Strathroy, home church to the Re:generation Centre, was pleased to be asked to help the people of Glencoe praise and thank God for the high school and the town.

Alumni Rev. Deb Dolbear-Vanbilsen gave a moving sermon “If you can’t do everything, just do something”. Representing the future of the high school was the Baker’s Dozen from Mosa Central Public School. Joining in the celebration was the flag group from the Re:generation Centre.

The Glencoe Ministerial combined services from local churches and everyone joined in to celebrate their faith and the 60th birthday of the school. Coffee and muffins were served after the service with some great conversation, thank yous and long good-byes.  Offerings were collected for the Benevolent Fund which helps families in need in Glencoe.

Southwest Middlesex welcomes

On behalf of the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex I am very pleased to welcome you back to Glencoe District High School.  It is an honour to be a part of the 60th anniversary of GDHS.

Southwest Middlesex will be full of smiles and laughter as we share fond memories of our school days together.  Catching up with those that we have not seen for some time will be a grand experience.

The volunteers who have made this reunion possible have worked very hard and deserve a pat on the back for making this homecoming possible.  Make sure that you enjoy as much of the reunion weekend as you possibly can with your former classmates.

We wish everyone a weekend full of family, friends and fun.

Doug Reycraft, Mayor, Municipality of Southwest Middlesex

Welcome home message from Principal

The staff and students of Glencoe District High School welcome you to the 60th Reunion festivities!  As Principal of GDHS I have been very impressed by the efforts the entire Reunion Committee has put forth to ensure a wonderful weekend for everyone.

I also want to assure you that GDHS continues to offer the top-notch education that our students deserve while also providing our young people with all of the extra-curricular activities and opportunities that everyone enjoys and remembers during weekends such as these.

Whether you are returning to GDHS for the first time in weeks, months or years – be sure to take in all that the weekend offers, take a good look around the school and enjoy what truly is a very special place!

I will see you on the long weekend!   Sincerely,  M. Moore, Principal

Letter to the Editor of Glencoe Transcript & Free Press

Pick up a copy of the Glencoe Transcript & Free Press.  It will be a big issue!  Here’s a letter than went in to Marie Williams Gagnon, the editor:

Hugh, Mary, Ralph

It is quite exciting to welcome everyone to celebrate our legacy of education at Glencoe District High School and the feeder schools that preceded it.

This celebration is for everyone who cares about our local high school.  It may be called a reunion, but this is a special community event for everyone.  The organizers hope that the parents of future students will attend the event, past and present teachers, elected officials and school board representatives, people who moved into the community recently, and anyone who cares about our youth and the importance of quality education! A note from our scholar, Michael McGill

Hi everyone! I’m Michael McGill and I received the GDHS 50th Anniversary Reunion Award this year at commencement. Currently, I am at Queen’s University in Kingston, studying commerce. I am using my elective courses to study Mandarin Chinese as well, hoping to one day do business in China. During my third year, I hope to study at Peking University or Tsinghua University in Beijing. After university, I plan to be involved in corporate marketing or human resources. I really appreciate all of the work that the GDHS Alumni & Friends association puts into financing awards such as the GDHS 50th Anniversary Reunion Award. After one semester here at Queen’s, I recognize the challenge that obtaining post secondary education presents. The support of organizations like the GDHS Alumni & Friends association is of great assistance. Thank you all for your contribution to my education, and that of my peers!
